Week before show week RESTORATION Blog and Show week

WEEK BEFORE SHOW WEEK !!

This week has be the week before we take to the stage and open to the public, so it's been the first week that we have been without scripts on stage, the forego found this really bought comedy to it, as people knew there lines so there was past and dynamic with the emotions. Scene as example of God posture and good direction for me would be the fist scene ... Here a picture to show you....

LINK ABOVE VIDEO OF REHEARSAL

I've upload a video in which i though that a scene went well as I and joe had rehearsed the scene everyday so that we can bring the comedy , how ever I will need to go over the lines due to I still needs some promting on two - I found this was because when actually doing the scene I look out for a clue to mine line however this scene there is no clue leading on to what I say next , however to over come this is found myself doing a que count and a patterned or song in my head to rememeber. I think the more practice that I have the more it will come into place as I will use muscle memoir.

SHOW WEEK !!!!

so this week could have gone better if you ask me personally for my side of things, i found this was because people didn't know their ques in scene, therefore lines were being missed, leaving people to improvise during scene. The improvisations were not the worse however it didn't help when people need a certain que to come on stage.

example I found where there was quite a lot of Improvisations would be the scene of Zach, Alicia and I, as there was a line that was missed the whole scene went down from there, meaning the story got lost due to mistake  being made like this it actually meant that a direction was then made to change the show to workshop scene.  Even though it was negative note to end the years on just scene and I reckon the audience got more of an understanding and more laughs this way which made it seem positive.

However i found with my vocal work had been poor during rehearsals due to not take control of my own warm up and just jumping straight on stage meaning that my body was not ready to perform, however this was changed with an ease as i simple just carried on doing restorern and facial work between my scene that bought my articulation to do a better level and long with diction, this help me have more confident and perform.

ADDITIONAL RESEARCH STAGE !!!

During the 16th an d17th century this is when the proscenium arch was introduced along with removable set(set change) , this was introduced by inigo jones. Inigo Jones, was inspired to introduced those to english theatres from when he use to travel in France and Italy,  however as we are all swear the civil war broke out coursing theatres to close due to Charles I.

Shortly after when Charles II took throne, theatres reopened, as Charles II was known as a party animal, theatre on stage became very flambĂ©ing as were became to take to the stage and it was scene to go to the theatre to party and have fun by being loud and get involve so if compeer todays theatre it would be panto as that is a lot of getting involved. This was known for Restoration, as  Charles II took throne in 1660 theatres reopened still with the arch (help with acoustics), scenery changing throughout the show, he also open theatres to the public again meaning people went crazy and saw it as on big party.

Also during restoration time theatres became semi-operas would help to bring the atmosphere to the show, as they would sing, play music or play special affect now we do this be SFX, that we take for granted. So when restoration was first introduce on stage it was shown to the public with theme such as a plain comedy and tragedy , leaving out the drama to make it less complex.

So If you was to see the double dealer back when first put on to stage, it would be very different with themes as tragedy and comedy as it would be more over the top, by the theme with lust as the women atcors were already seen bad upon by taking to the stage, they saw no point in holding back and going out there so they would have had corsets on show and ankles, this was down to helps show the audience in  that was take place, also the audience would react to this by screaming out and the men thinking hot, by shutting , so back in the 17th century the theatre was twice as loud. Due to this the actors would stop and wait for the audience to calm down till they would wait to carry on their lines.

Where in today society theatre is seen more of a place where people go to watch back and enjoy the performance and it is now conceder rude if people talk during a performance now a days also over the last few years theatre has been come more politics built, then just for fun.

17th Century Fashion Research

Fashion 17th century -

Fastion in the 17th century was influenced by king Charles, as he was knee on fashion, it never helped when the civil war came around as on leaflets that was used to convince people to take sides as the publishes would mock the king along with the cavaliers. They would not be taken serious due to the outfit they would wear ...instead of describing their outfit here is a picture ; (picture speak pounder the words)

If when looking at this picture you can tell that it was not suitable for war, therefore people though that he wasn't taking the issue serious and though it was joke, as he put fashion first as the shoes would has ringing sound to them when they were walking or doing any action with their feet, so the roundheads could always hear them coming.

After kings Charles was caught and killed, King Charles II took place on the thrown, even though he said he was not going to follow the same route as his father, in away he did. King Charles II went crazy with bold fashion. example of this is when he changed the parliament outfits or when he had the suite, therefore no long wearing waist coat (is the word we use today) and just wearing a Royal coat instead for the king.

However during the restoration time the military influences in mean clothing go replaced by a brief period of decorative exuberance which then sobered into coat, waistcoat and breeches, that reign for the next century and a half. in the normal cycle of fashion, thd broad, high-waisted silhouette of the following period were replaced by low waisted with a long, lean line for both men and women.

Language of the Fan

Restoration drama

In 17th century the langueage of the fan was seen very popular as they were used in real life by scoity of England, therefore theatre used this as adventage and used it on stage. This bought comdey for the women as it was consider a screact language at the time. This was then used in the 17th century as centre as communicated the equivalent to 21st century centre texting.

The link to research found - > www.donnamacmeans.com/the-secret-language-of-the-fan/

The fan placed near the heart
“you have won my love”
Resting fan on the heart
“my love for you is breaking my heart”
A closed fan touched to the right eye
“when maybe I be allowed to see you”
Letting the fan rest on your right cheek
Yes
Letting the fan rest on your left cheek
No
Fan held over left ear
I wish to get rid of you
Cover left ear with open fan
Do not portray our secret
Hal open fan pressed to the lips
You may kiss me
Putting the fan handle to the lips
Kiss me
Resting the fan on her lips
I don’t trust you
Opening and closing the fan rapidly
You are cruel
Quickly and impetuously closing the fan
I’m jealous
Drawing the fan through her hands
I hate you
Fanning slowly
I am married
Fanning quickly
I’m engaged
Hiding the eyes behind a open fan
I love you
Dropping the  fan
I belong to you
Twirling fan in left hand
We are being watched
Twirling fan in right hand
I love another
Passing the fan from one hand to another
I see that you are looking at another women

 Here are some of the exapmle how i will aplly the language to my perfromance;
  • Scene that are with Sir Pual, I would use my fan to show I am married therefore the action that I would use be Fanning slowly, I would also do this when in a scene with Cyanthin so that she dont ecpect anything.
  • I would use the fan action "the fan placed near the heart" would be key to use for the scene wirth careless to show much he has gained upon me.
  • However when with Mellofont due to the fact I want him to take there and then the action i would use is "handel of the fan to my lips"
Thoese are only a few action that would use, this is going to take a lot of rehearsing as Iwill have to signel to other male how i feel for them behind Sir Paul; as most of my scene Sir Palu tends to enter. Therefore action would have to change quickly back "I'm married." If you are to realate to do scoity it can be used in poker when they do eye sginels.

 Research-
This reserach relates back to make up reserach done in pervously blog; this is poem writen by Jothana swiff called a beautiful youth nymph going to bed, the poem is about a younge women that who is going through to get the look of the fashion, this opened my eyes with how much  tenstion my cahracter would be holding, as being weathly she would ahve all the comstics of the date therefore she would be in pain to keep up with fastion.

restoration blog week 4 and 5

WEEK 4 and 5

*- UNSURE ON THE SPELLING

week 3/4

*- UNSURE ON THE SPELLING

This week I found some issues with my voice, such as due to the posture being changed for them period of the show, this lead to me to hold tension in my shoulders more then usual, also as my character tend to all hold her head held high and chin out, this also gave me tension in my jaw; however i was in advantage when i found this as the following week i should lead a warm up of the whole body. Therefore in my own time i could found excise that did this but work to my advantage such a yoga, with maintaining an injury in the arm this meant that i wasn't able to uphold on the movement and structure of a pose the fore it didn't hope to the best of my abilities, however i have seen improvement in my posture in day to day actives.

Also i found that yoga relies the tension in my neck and shoulders when doing the voice of Lady plyant. This means that vocals are now coming more natural to me and i feel more comfortable with it. so when it come to do a run through lines with Yasmin( who is also Lady Plyant in 1st cast) it help to jog memory, therefor I'm able to add more dynamic and colour into my vocals.

This week was hard to continue with the blocking of act 4 and 5 due to do the fact half of the class had taken time off; it was hard to run scene that had been blocked s people that their scene where is, didn't attend class. When doing act 4 and 5 we used someone to fill in with the blocking then to tell person when next in however due to people being built differently, it became an issue with the
blocking as we found it didn't work.

so even though people wasn't in we still worked on character to help become them, especial with the walk and siting on the chair, as a few weeks ago the posture of the walk was still a bit to much work in the shoulder, making it look put on, this isn't the image that i wanted, so to overcome this it took a lot of practise in the mirror, this is were i found the work should be carried in the legs. I remember this when going through old notes of the workshop. I also found when setting on the chair as its meant to be gentle sit at the edge of the chair and go down slowly like pice of paper following all the work in the thin* and the bum therefore the muscle will need to be stronger, so i have managed to do a leg work out every night to do this, so i don't course my self in the performance and it become more freely. Also another positive it will help my legs look good for the summer.

When showing the work back to my class mates after work i have done at home, they all said it was very good as i carry characteristic in my eyes by rolling them around and looking at something but not given away what i think this is something that my character would do a lot off ( mentioned in another blog repeat), however because my walk was already at the mark i was challenged with the speed of it and we found when walking really fast my arms tended to swing side to side, to stop this i took a not from dance when i was little, when turning look in the spot and it will keep you on point and stop form going in a different direction, by applying this i stop as must eye movement, however it was still noticeable in that i was doing, by keeping certain eye contact allowed me to walk fast and keep my arms from moving and pick up the past.

A weakness that i carry is line learning, it is only really with the last two acts wont tend to stick and i believe this is due to some of the words use, in the lines. however we went through different techniques in class until we found the ones that worked for us, i took on board at first saying a line 10 times in a row no matter how small the line, i found this worked but not fully as i would miss words from the lines that were key to the grammar. The second technique that i looked at was writing the lines down, instead of writing the whole scene down, due to my injury i went a different way with this such as writing the line down 3 to 4 times the first time looking at the script then not looking at the script then checking it after, then do this 2 more times after i had written it 4 time i would say it another two. I found this worked for me as after doing 4 lines like this i would then write the scene out with the que lines; this worked for me as it help me get use to the que lines and the patten of what line came never, because i have image memory i could see in my mind the key words of each line and the patten written on the page that help jog it back to me when saying it. I then went away and remember that when taking my GCSE when doing physic i remember i would listen to songs, how sound wave would work and make my own up of the maths within in; therefore applied this to my line learning, so i sang each line 3 to 4 times again then when through and sung all the lines in the scene, this really help to learn a scene with Mr Carless.

I found when doing those techniques the main thing that kept popping up was the reparation of the lines. So I found that 3 different techniques worked for me, now i have the advantage of learning them in different ways so i don't get bored and making it exciting when going over the script.

Another voice note that had appear during rehearsal was the ‘ing’s” and “t’s” of words, The “ing’s” had a Portsmouth accent on them making me sound common. This affect my character as she is meant to me wealthy and posh so diction and articulation is key, with my “t’s” i was not hit my hard plate, instead i was hitting my soft so it meant when saying “that” for example the “t” was getting dropped meaning it was being heard as “tha”. To overcome this during class we looked at tongue twist, ones that i made sure i put my focus on was the ones that were for the hard plate, after this lesson i found this improved, this is something that i will keep my focus on in my spear time are articulation is key when performing.

— I will upload some more research later tonight or tuesday after college on costume and language of the fan

Restoration, milestone, script annotation and film research

Script annotation

Now that it has come to the end of blocking all the acts part from a few scene; it was time to really go through my script and annotate it, so that I remember blocking and meanings so then I'm not just saying lines after line.

So the script annotation has been done so that i know all stage direction; i've also put emotions as hits so i know the mood such as anger for example, then target and objective so I know what i want in each scene.

Here is some pictures of my annotated script ...
page 21 to 22 ACT 2 Scene 4

Then my second ACT 2 scene 5 , page 23 to 24

I've ask added adjectives such as flirt to help with scene run smooth and allow my peer chemistry  to bouncy off, at the start of my first scene I'm in I've added a little note to remind how I've kinda of based my character on.
So That the blocking is more clear to my mind set i've also added in some drawn pictures so help jog my memory.

Milestone meeting

Meeting the milestone have been a challenge to, if I'm to be  due to medical reason however I always have said to my self no matter what is wrong try you're best to be the best, so I saw this as more off a challenge and made me want to achieve more.
The main one that I have found challenge is learning lines, as my peers in the scene with me haven't been in as much as i would have hoped for therefore i haven't had as much rehearsal time, i would have like to help with my lines. Therefore I've had to go away and come to ideas that will help me with meeting the milestone deadline, such as singing my lines and repeating this 5 to 10 times a night, this is only on example with what i used.

Milestone that I have found easy to complete is blogs and the objective excise; as i read my script and tools notes that are key for my character, because of my objective i was able to play on that to build my character boldness and play with the flirty and purtue side of my character.

Film research -

over the last few weeks I have been looking into research and theme and style of acting that i would be able to relate it to; in class we watched stage beauty , that high lighted some theme such as love, passion, ..... - those can relate back to The Double Dealer as it about love and passion for one of each other for example.
Aslo while watching this due to the film be based on the 17th century , I notice that it only had one objective(story line) through out the film, this was women on stage. Just William Congevre would do as many play writes of the time would also do this compeer to play mower day.
The film also gave me as female playing in restoration; how lucky the actors would originally be due to the fact not many theatre like the idea and how much times changed in society; as female were used to help with wardrobe and stage hands before the law came in to place, also it showed how little recepect mean had as they would slap their bums and push the women out the way. I though this is key to know when betraying this time in history as I would like to some how bring this into my character .
The change in society want just for women it was also for men, as they have been changed role to role very quick and someone as class we discussed was how men would have found it hard to know if  they were a women trapped in a mans body or man trapped as women mind; as from a young age they have been pushed out of the male in them an push towards more the female, how they would act and feel. so when mean had to play a role of man, many actors couldn't carry on and had to stop acting. where others made the male role sound like a female and this is where comx-hons come into play.

The second film i watched in my sear time was Belle as it help me understand, the role of a lady around the time frame; it also help understand in that Cynthia would be going through and how I the older Lady would tell her to go for the money otherwise she would lose everything. Therefore i had learnt small tracts from the film.
also i though the film really showed a real insight with the articulation, and the past and tempo on lines and how women of the period would add colour in the voice on words.

so over the last week i was thinking in costume for lady Plyant and if it would be correct colour scheme and style however when watching the film, i notice all the women were wearing something like i have chosen to wear, here is the costume  that i have chosen to wear and the reason being that it is bold and very out there from the others apart from Lady touchwood however i believe this is something we are also competing for, so i think they whole colours of it all tend to go really well.

(This is not the costume fitted as few adjustment will need to be made)

As a lady of restoration this is something in that would be warn around the time.

The film also help me understand the attitude of the walk and more with the mind set- and this is were in week 3 we developed our walking and i out into play the eyes to my character and this showed that glance and though about everything no matter what and this is something that Lady Plyant would do as she isn't always saying that is on here mind.

Restoration Character study

Lady Plyant Character study

Name; Lady Plyant

Age;  26 (researched the age that people were likely to die would be 35-45) – There by placing the character lady plyant the age of 25 of that day of age she would be in the mind-set of the present day 40 years.

Year; The play is based in 1963

Place; Just on the outer of London, so Ladies and Lords are able to accuse all the parties.
The house witch Ladies and Lords would stay in …
Garden….                                                                    Inside hall witch most scene would take place …

However Lady plyant wouldn’t always be around this kind of environment, she would also be walking around the streets of London that would be filled of tradesmen and common poor people; that would help her high states.

17th century streets of London would look like this.

This painting will show the day to day when not I the house that Lady plyant would be around to show her highest states; and would use to her advantage, when with male company to show here body and beauty as she can afford all the makeup and clothes.
Personality;  Lady Playnt is very bold and flambĂ©ing  (referent to week 3 blog Head teacher), easy to any pretender ( very fake towards people); however if to go literal Plyant the name means very flexible and easy, therefore if to betray this it would be it doesn’t take much for me to bend to over, the way they would like me too. However I am insolent towards my husband. Very self-centre and only cares how things will affect me.
Relationship with Characters;
Sir Paul Plyant – Husband to Lady Plyant, however do not feel any affection towards him, therefore my relationship towards him is only for his money, and only disappear it because he does not has a son to give it to, therefore it means Lady Plyant will get it, as he is in old age being in his thirties, means Im ling my second husband up.
Cynthia – Sir Paul Plyant daughter therefore she is my step daughter; but I forever forget she is there and push her out by not listening and putting her down.

Mellfront -  He is promised to Cynthia, however I would lie him to myself and would love him to show affection to me shown in page 23 to 24, when ask him to ask me, this is kept secret in my half, as I wish to brake the match of them.

Careless – Also another person that Lady Plyant wishes to have affection , this is cleared to Sir Paul but him being a drunken mess, doesn't really pick up in Lady Plyant be a dishonourable.

Maskwell - The double dealer in the play, how even even thigh there is no straight relationship to I, he is Messing around to Lady touchwood, and want to marry Cynthia so they want to break the match just like I.

Lord Touchwood- The uncle to Mellefont, therefore our families will be join after the marriage. Also Husband of Lady Touchwood, also he is the Brother in law to Sir Paul.

Lord Froth - A friend of Sir Paul and husband to a “friend” of lady Plyants called Lady Froth, that tends to advise Cynthia a lot.

Brisk - Only ever in one scene with him, however he is consider a pert coxcomb therefore i don’t really hold a conversation with him.

Lady Touch- Meant to be on of my close friends however i feel like this is an act due to the fact they are never in a scene together, sister to Sir Paul, therefore the is relationship in the marriage, I think of her to be very touchy with the mean and don't trust a word she says, also she is married to Lord Touchwood but is in Love with Mellefont and want the Marriage not to go a head.

Lady Froth - I found her annoying due to the fact she believes to be very artistic and believes she is a head in the world and better then any on walking, as a secret love for Brisk. Also around due to the fact she is close to Cythnia.

How to play Lady Plyant  - Characteristic

Plyant is a words that describes my character a lot due to the fact she is very easy and bends to what every she want; even though this is a key factor in the character she is also smart as she is educated compeer to others in the play, thats why she can be very sly.

Lady Plyant accent, is very posh english of the time as its the time just after Shakespeare therefore the language  is be developed during the time of the play, is very important to hit the hard plate on the ’t’s example, so articulation is key with the accent.

Lady Plyant I have discussed in a preference blog.

So you don’t have keep going back to this blog, if any character update i will put this n a blog (additional character update) so that you know.

RESTORATION WEEK 3

week 3

This week have been good for my development of my character as we took on the challenge  of talking about an object that meant so much to us , therefore I bought i the Scarlett petticoat witch i gave to Sir Paul; then he converted into a night cap however left the skirt. The background of this was that i one love this Spanish tradesmen that work for Sir Paul. However he didn't love me and would reaper this in my ear "yo no te queor"; Lady Plyant be her though the complete opposite, this un-viled in why my Character was so protected about being "Virtue", so into afire.

when asked who would you relate you're character to today, in a film ext ....

I would relate Lady Plyant to the head teacher from ST Trinians, ... picture to remind you if you have never seen the film ...

She is very flambéing and bold, and acts that she knows everything that is happening in the world, however she doesn't, has a quite low voice that is carried in the mouth a throat , just like Lady Plyant when we looked at the artict of the voice, that highlighted the way our Characters would walk , the type of typical character would be called ....; this would also effect the way they would sound.

Also found that some of the tic were very restoration, this maybe one of a rear performance where a male plays a leading female In a film, therefore this is also something to relate as kings Charles would have just placed the act were male can only play male rolls; this shows how times have changed again and been over seen where is doesn't matter what part you play.

Here is a link ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO88ogbgHUw - that shows and will hopefully help to make my point clear by when  say that relates to Lady Plyant by being bold , very out there ....

Research into Make up on the face , when trying to found an object i looked more into make up first when i found beauty marks to hide blemishes coursed by the chalk and lead which they would apply to their face to make the face white as the whiter it was the more wealthy they would be considered; so those beauty spots would be made of silk , as time pass it became a sign language so for my character I'm married therefore i would have one on my right cheek to show this and very flirtish so i would have another on by my mouth.

Then as a women i would use a white powered for my face and neck and breast and apply it really really thick then a poly ten read on the cheeks.

i found this on you tube video ...

RESTORATION WEEK 2

Week 2 -

This was put act 1 till 3 together as whole however first act 3 wasnt blocked, so this was done first. So because of the fact we had to run act 1-2 together first the peperation I took on was to learn my lines for these acts. while learnign my line i found when giving my self small objectives to each (so what I would like to achive after my lines/targets) emxplem from my script would be ACT 2 when Lay playant and mellofont together and last line of page 23 counting on to page 24-  Im saying  bassically dont ask me but do please. so the odjective here is tio use my voice to show that mellontfornt ask me to the querstion.

Other perpartion that i have carried out is a small articulation vocal work every day as it is key that restoration is key to all as helps to show states, whith the the show an helps build charatcer, text work that i found helps is to really over act on lines like pnato then bring it down, to help with the style of acting.

I found bceause we have worked on act 2 and three so all tigetehr three scene with Lady plyant i started to really develope my character, by giving my charcacater small little ticks such as always touching my face and making body contuct with other then my husband, so show im not instred and out of love, this is only a trail to see how it works within the scene. lady playnt is insolent to her husband and easy to any pretender.

Reasearch -

when looking at reshearsh about the style of acting, i found something that i may help when a female actress was to act a flirty on stage they would maybe show so ankle in the scene, this was bought in when men were acting as women; so the woman of the stage took it on as men in the adunice got a frill out of this, I found this would help for the bloking and when leaning over joe to show that im being flitsion to the adunice show a bit of ankle.

I also found some prop research that all women in the 16th century would have those would me small powered boxes - that would carry the white powered make up in they would look a bit like this ....

this picture is off a make up box from the 1750 - however all the ladies would off had one like this as they were mainly pass down in the family from mothers ext..

RESTORATION RESEARCH BLOG

RESTORATION - research blog

The double dealer is based in the 17th century, that is a key section of history due to the change of society and the out brake of theatre and pubs and partying was bought back after years of being told that everything was banned and not being allowed to do anything. so after the king had changed everyone went wild with partying and socialising and drinking so the whole behaviour of society changed.

The english civil war happened during the years off 1642 till 1652, so a few years before The Double Dealer however this doesn't mean that William Congreve didn't get influence by the actions that had just happened with politic. The English civil war was a series of armed conflicts and political machinations parliamentarians known as the roundheads and the royalists known as the cavaliers, the war was over principally manner of the government. The first Civil war was during the 1642 to 46 then lead to the second civil war that happened two years after the first, so it took place in 1648 till 49. Those wars pitted the supporters of King Charles I against the supporters of the Long Parliament, while the 3rd civil war 1649 to 1651 was saw fighting between supports of king Charlers II and supporters of the Rump parliament.

The Civil war ended with the Parliamentarian having victory at the battle of Worcester on the 3rd of September 1651. This lead to an overall outcome of the war was threefold; the trial and execution of Charles I, the exile of his son Charles II; and the replacement of english monarchy with, at first the commonwealth of England. Then the Protectorate that happened in 1653-59 under Oliver Cromwell’s personal rule this is were the Interregnum took place.

The Interregnum of England, Scotland and Ireland first started with execution of Charles I in january 1644 (september 1651 for Scotland) lead to decisively need in July 1660, where son Charles II  was restored yo the throne of 3 realms but however his didn't acclaimed king of Scotland till 1650. in the 16th and 17th century. During the 16th and 17th centuries there was an enlist group called the Puritans that was including but not limited to English Calvinists. The group was founded by john Calvin from the clergy shortly after the accession of Elizabeth I of England in 1558. In modern language the word ‘puritan’ is used to mean ‘against pleasure’.  The word when used historically, is pejoratively to characterise the group as extremists, similar to the cathars of France.

However as years pasted by the term Puritan, never did formally defined sect or religious division within Protestantism, it was used rarely t describe people after the turn of the 18th century. On the other hand Puritan ideals either became incorporated into the church of England, such as the formal rejection of Roman Catholicism; which fell out favour such as the beliefs in demonic possession. this then went on to be absorbed into many Protestant sect that emerged in the late 17th and 18th centuries in Americans and Britain’s.

while during the time that the Puritan mail took action during the 17the century; Oliver Cromwell who was born in 25th april 1599 and passed away in 1658 3rd september, done his fair shears in office, as becoming part of the cambridge Parliament 1640 till 1644 that precede by council of stat. However before working with the Cambridge parliament he worked for Huntingdon in 1629 to 1629, as you can see there is a 11 years gap which lead some people questions his work when moved to Cambridge Parliament.

However Oliver Cromwell was known as working as Lord Protector, Protectorate was a period during the commonwealth under family dictatorship. Even though Oliver Cromwell worked as from1653 till 1658 (his death bed), it didn't take long for his brother  Richard Cromwell to take over in 1658 till 1659. he worked with the upper house Parliament during that year but however worked lower house, house common from 1654 to 1656.

Charles II was born on the 29th 1630 of May, passed away on the 16th of February 1685. A few years before William Congreve wrote the double dealer. Charles II , father is the Charles I and mother of Henriette Maria of France. He reign from May 29th 1660 till february 1685 then king of Scotland January 1649 till September 1651, the predecessor was Charles I. He was only 12 when the Civil war began and two years later was appointed nominal commander in chief in west an England. However with the victory going to parliament, he was forced into exile on the continent. he was in the Netherlands he also learnt of his father execution.

Then 1650 charles did a deal with Scotland and was proclaimed King. Then with a Scottish army he invaded England however was defeated by Cromwell at the battle of Worcester in 1651. Then again escaped into exile and this time wasn't till 1660 when he was invited back to England to reclaim his throne. Then even though those had signed Charles I’s death warrant were punished, the new king pursued a policy of political tolerance and power-sharing. Hid desire for religious toleration, due to the large part to his own leaning towards Catholicism, were to prove more contentious. so he made a umber of attempts to formalise toleration of Catholics and non-conformists but was forced to back down in the face of strongly hostile parliament.

Charles II was knowing for liking to party; therefore he reopened all the Theatre , the man two that was only funded by the king was

The restoration of the english monarchy began in 1660 when the English and Scottish and Irish monarchies were all restored by Charles II. The term Restoration is used two describe both actual; event by which the monarchy was restored. The period of several years after which a new political settlement was established. However we know restoration as drama as it reflect a lot of the politics  and the event that happened around that timing.

So after the Restoration saw the emergence of the first professional actress and playwrights. some people believe that women went on stage straight as women however years before women would disguised themselves as mean so that they would reveal their ankles and leg in mean clothing ( as we know that was shamed on in the 17th century). This was quickly proved very popular in Restoration drama.

However the first women to appear on the professional stage in England is generally considered to be Margaret Hughes who performed at the veer street theatre in 1660 in a production of Othello. many young girl of the time was inspired by her act to stage, others though it a it was joke. However as it became more well known Davenat employed eight actress to perform wit his company shortly after Margaret Hughes.

Other well known actresses include Elizabeth Barry who was known as the queen of tragedy she was one of the few actress that was trained for the stage by the notorious womaniser, the first Earl of Rochester he also loved her, they then became lovers. When the most infamous actress of the 17the century was Nell Gwyn, that was painted nude for Charles II and bore two children.

There was also well known actress such as Susanna Mountfort, she was the daughter of Thomas Percival who was a minor actor in the Duke’s Company. However Susanna Mountfort made her debut in 1681 with the Key’s Company. This offered her great opportunities for such a young actress. she became more of an outstanding comedienne.

So after women took to the stage the restoration period also saw women become recognised as professional playwrights, the most famous of those were Aphra Behn. This was a group of woman that wrote plays that also took part on stage; the type of women this group include people such Susannah Centlivre who wrote 19 plays one Included ‘A Bold Stroke For a wife ‘.

This doesn't mean that mean didn't take over, William Congreve that was well known during 1693 (The double dealer was written) then till 1700, he spent his childhood in ireland, where his father  has settled during therein of Charles II. His education was at kilkenny college where he met Jonathan they stayed friends for the rest of etches life and helped with each others work; however when originally moved to London wasn't for drama it was to study to law but felt more towards drama. The type of play he wrote were high-brow sexual comedy the double dealer is a great example of this, as this was during restoration period.
There other play writes like William Congreve such as Sir George Etherege that was an english dramatist he wrote play like Comical Revenge or, Love in a Tub in 1664.

When Charles II went  ahead and restored to the throne and then the theatre companies were quick to provide the public performances again, initially in converted tennis courts. However this freedom was short lived and Charles II soon reorganised the Theatre. He done this by creating a monopoly through royal patent.

The licensed only allowed two companies to produce theatre in London, these theatres were Lincoln’s Inn Field and Drury lane became known as the ‘pstent theatres” and were managed by two well known doctors that made people want to go and watch shows and want to become actors. Those directors were Thomas killigrew and William Davenant.

Charles really like the idea of entertainment such a drama and opera as he had seen quite a lot while being in exile in France. Therefore he encourage killigrew and Davenant to introduce women on stage that Killigrew did by add Margaret Hughes to the stage. The type of work that patent put on were tragedies, comedies, plays, opera and musical theatre.

This is an huge impact to drama as it bough it back a lot earlier then that it would have been so all actress should be grateful to Charles the II to the history that we have in drama.

Those picture are some example that theatre use to look like.

Theatre is not what its like today were people watch and get involved , theatre was more about the involvement back in the 17th century, this was be the audience point at the higher class a laughing and people talking over the actors; as people went to socialise and audience would throat fruit and vegetable at the actress.

There is evidence saying that all those event happened due to some man called Samuel Pepys, who was an Englishman that was member of parliament who is mow most famous for the Diary that he kept far decade while still relatively. This is because it is one of few document left describing the event that happened in the 17th century.

The event that his diary mention is the great fire of London and how much was left in London after the fire and what was destroyed this is key to history as it tells us what happened word to word the disadvantage is that its only one persons words that we are really following. Other even that is key in the diary is the great plague of London Samuel describes each day as it goes part this really help give an insight in to how people felt.

However he relates back restoration as he documented on Thomas Killigrew plays and this event  to the whole history of restoration.

During the 17th and 18th century there were a few poets that played a big part of theatre and history as they relayed history with in their poems. One those key people were Jonathan Swift was born november 1667 and passed in october 1745, was an anglo-irish satirist and political pamphleteer then of course poetry and cleric that became Dean of St patrick’s Cathedral of Dublin. However remembered for work such as Gulliver’s Travels ext….

Jonathan Swift was regarded by the Encyclopeadia Britannica as a foremost proses satirist in the english language however around the time he was less known for his poetry as he originally published all of the work he done under pseudonyms if not he would publish it anonymously.

another well known play write was John Wilmott, 2nd earl of rochester. John was an english poet and courtier of Charles II’s Restoration court. The restoration was reacted against the ‘spiritual authoritarianism” of the puritan ( puritan id discussed above). however was well known for his wild life style with his poetry. those were often inerlinked with each other. his poetry reflect upon the day  on the 17th century.
